Save the dates!  Club One Casino is hosting the 2010 Central Valley Poker Championships from Sun, Aug 1st through Sun, Aug 8th.  Last year’s events drew over 1,400 entrants and prize pools totaling over $115,000.  This year’s schedule of events includes several NL events, a partners event, a limit event, an Omaha event and a bounty event, as well as the $5,000 guaranteed Championship.  We’ve also added a new $25 buy-in warm-up event at the start of the series.

Like last year, we’ll be offering points for placing in each CVPC event as well as prize money, and at the end of the series, we’ll crown the Overall CVPC Champion.  Last year’s overall champion was Club One regular Kevin Lusk.  Is this your year?

On July 28-31, come down to Club One Casino for the CVPC Warm-up event.  This is a 4-day event with a $25 buy-in and a big $10,000 guarantee!  It’s a great way for novice players to take a shot at a real prize pool and for regular tournament players to tune their game for the 3rd Annual CVPC the following week.  Preliminary days start at 6p.

The CVPC warm-up event is a 4-day event from Jul 28-31 with a $25 buy-in and a $10,000 guaranteed prize pool.  There will be three qualifying days (Day 1A – Wed, Day 1B – Thu and Day 1C – Fri), and the top 30 players from each preliminary day will return on Saturday (July 31) to play down to the money.  Players who bust out of Day 1A or Day 1B can re-enter and play the following day for another $25.  The tournament structure includes 5,000 start chips and 20-minute levels throughout the event.

Attention UFC fans!  On Saturday, July 3rd at 7p, Club One Casino is the spot to watch the highly anticipated UFC 116:  Lesnar vs. Carwin live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The UFC heavyweight championship will be on the line when Lesnar makes his long-awaited return to the Octagon to defend his world title against interim beltholder Carwin.  Carwin has destroyed each of his 12 opponents in less than a round; Lesnar has been just as devastating in his victories over Randy Couture and Frank Mir.  When these two brawlers meet in the main event of UFC 116 for the title, you can expect some serious pipe-hittin’ carnage.

On June 25th at 8p, JazzFresno presents vocalist Julie Kelly performing a set of jazz and vocal standards at the  Club One Casino Event Center at 1033 Van Ness Avenue, Fresno, CA.

The late jazz critic Leonard Feather once said, “Julie Kelly radiates a sense of joy and spontaneity.  Listening to her, you are reminded that jazz singing is still alive and well!”  Feather’s successor at the Los Angeles Times, Don Heckman, referred to Kelly as having, “one of the finest vocal jazz instruments of the 90′s”.

Kelly moved to Los Angeles in 1980 and shortly after that began her recording career with Pausa Records.  Her 1984 “We’re On Our Way” contains her captivating version of Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen’s “All My Tomorrows”.  Two years later there was “Never Let Me Go”.  In 1992 she recorded “Some Other Time” on CMG Records with pianist/arranger Tom Garvin, and in 1997, “Stories To Tell” was released in collaboration with pianist arranger Bill Cunliffe.  Julie and Bill collaborated again on her 1999 “Into The Light”, and now Julie teams back up with Tom Garvin for “Kelly Sings Christy”.  During her years in Los Angeles, she worked with such luminaries as Benny Green, Nat Adderley, Ray Brown, John Clayton, Ross Tompkins, Bobby Ojeda, Gary Foster, and Alan Broadbent.  Julie can be found in Leonard Feather’s Encyclopedia of Jazz.
